Would a solar trickle charger prevent battery drain?

by on 2010/03/13

It looks like there is something in my electrical system that is causing a small battery drain. If I don't drive my truck for a few days, it won't start. (I have a brand new battery.)

The mechanic checked the fuses and found nothing so the next step would be to go into the dash - it could get expensive.

I was wondering about those solar battery trickle chargers. MIght one of those be sufficient to prevent my battery dying? I live in a sunny climate.

(auto is a 94 Chevy S10 pickup)

Yes, the solar charger will keep your battery charged. But make sure it has something in place to keep from OVER-charging your battery. Overcharging can permanently damage the battery.

They might, but I would be skeptical. A better option might be to buy a battery post switch that you can use to turn off the battery power right at the battery. They between your battery cable and battery post and are very easy to install.

When you are not going to use the truck, just flip the switch to avoid draining the battery.

YOU SHOULD CHECK TO SEE WHAT IS DRAINING YOUR BATTERY. iNTERIOR LIGHT, BRAKE LIGHT CHECK WIREING ETC.

I was in a similar situation to you and kept on getting caught out when my battery was drained.

I got a trickle charger and its been fnie ever since…. To be honest, you SHOULD look into what is draining the battery but its something ive not had the time, nor money to do. Considering how cheap you can get a trickle charger for, its certinaly worthwhile.
