Electric Vehicle Conversion – 3 Basic Skills Required to Begin Your Conversion

As a novice ev car builder, it can be a daunting task to begin your first conversion. There are certain skills which are needed to successfully complete an electric vehicle conversion, most people who do work on their own motor vehicle will be able to do most of these tasks. Some of the more complicated tasks will have to be taken to a professional workshop to complete, more about that later.

All that being said, if you have done a few DIY projects and serviced your gas motor vehicle a few times there should be nothing stopping you from learning the skills necessary to build your own electric vehicle. So what skills do I need and what will I need to learn or possibly get done to build my own electric vehicle you may ask? Well here is a list which will give you an idea although it is not a complete list:

1. Basic Mechanical Skills
You will need to be able to make small brackets to mount switches, relays and sensors on. You will mainly use simple hand tools for this, namely pliers, hammer, a small vice, files and possibly a electric hand drill to complete these tasks

2. Welding
Depending on the vehicle which you select for your ev conversion, you will need to make racks to hold the batteries. These racks must be strong enough to hold the batteries and must be well secured onto the body of the conversion vehicle. The best way to construct these racks is to weld them together and then weld them onto the chassis of the vehicle taking care not to cause the chassis to buckle because of the heat. Some of the more popular vehicles used for conversions have pre-manufactured racks which will eliminate this necessity.

3. Automotive Mechanics
It will be necessary during the process of the conversion of your vehicle to electric to disassemble, remove, rebuild and install certain parts of the internal combustion engine which you are converting. For this a certain level of automotive mechanical skills will be to your advantage so that you are able to complete these tasks yourself otherwise it may be necessary to make use of the services of a mechanical workshop to assist you.

These are the basic skills required when starting a electric vehicle conversion project, but do not become discouraged if you do not feel that you have these skills but would still like to take on such a project, ask around in your neighbourhood there may well be other ev enthusiasts who are more than willing to help you with your electric vehicle conversion.
